Arjun Kapoor made his acting debut in 2012 with the drama Ishaqzaade. The film earned him the Zee Cine Award for Best Male Debut. He achieved further commercial successes in films Gunday, 2 States and Ki & Ka. The actor played the antagonist in the 2024 film Singham Again. In an exclusive interview with Bollywood Bubble, Arjun Kapoor reveals people make personal judgements about him but never speak about his work.
Arjun Kapoor on people’s opinions are based on hits and flops
When asked if people’s opinions are solely based on hits and flops, Arjun Kapoor said, “I think people’s opinions shouldn’t matter too much. I hope people don’t judge you based solely on your hits and flops. But those around you—people you know personally—their opinions affect you more. You start doubting, wondering if they judge you for success or failure. Sometimes you reflect and feel a little unsure, thinking, ‘My last one didn’t work, but I hope when I meet a producer or director, they don’t judge me just by that.'”
Speaking of if your previous work affects your present-day chances for joining an upcoming project, the actor said, “It does impact the business, of course; that’s reality. We’re all actors, defined by the box office. We come from a generation before the OTT era, where the box office dictated much of our careers. So yes, it makes a difference. It’s not like a single failure matters, but if things go wrong repeatedly, it changes the numbers and calculations; that’s just how the industry is. I’m not the first, nor will I be the last to handle this—it’s part of the business.”
Arjun Kapoor on clickbait culture
During the same interview, Arjun also spoke on how constructive criticism is a part of the clickbait culture. He said, “Personally, I never let it affect how I see people or how they see me. But yes, it feels bad when you hope people appreciate what you’re doing. You try to understand why something wasn’t liked, sorting out constructive criticism from what’s just part of the clickbait culture. You wonder if someone could tell you how to improve or explain, ‘Okay, you didn’t like my performance, but why has it become so personal?'”
The 2 States actor continued, “That’s where it starts to sting. These days, people can get personal, which cuts a bit deeper. For instance, if you give a review, even without any personal grievance, it’s as if you have to go to extremes to get a reaction. In doing so, the reaction becomes so loud and negative that there’s no way back. You think, ‘This person tore me apart, saying I should be kicked out of the industry. But they didn’t actually talk about my work—they made it personal, saying this shouldn’t happen with Arjun Kapoor.'”
Arjun Kapoor concluded, “When things turn this personal, it gets difficult to understand and becomes a bit irritating. But it’s not about dealing with people in your close circle or even the industry itself. Because their things are measured and sorted out eventually.”
